Recurrent miscarriage

After heartbreaking losses, a pregnancy that reached full term

  • Cervical cerclage and week-by-week surveillance

She carried a painful history of recurrent pregnancy losses and previous preterm deliveries, so this pregnancy required special care and close monitoring from the very beginning. In cases like these it is essential to investigate the possible causes and carefully assess the cervix — particularly when the history suggests cervical insufficiency, where the cervix cannot remain closed throughout pregnancy.

After thorough evaluation, a cervical cerclage was placed at the appropriate time to support the cervix. But the cerclage was only the beginning: regular follow-up assessed the cervix’s length and appearance, her symptoms, and the baby’s growth and wellbeing. Supportive treatment was given whenever indicated, and any infection was treated promptly.

Week after week, each milestone was another step towards the goal. The pregnancy progressed to the ninth month, and she delivered a healthy baby after a journey filled with both anxiety and hope. One of the hardest things an obstetrician sees is a patient who has lost pregnancy after pregnancy — and one of the most rewarding is hearing her newborn cry.
