Visiting and booking

How do I book an appointment?

Message the clinic on WhatsApp. It is the fastest route and the one most patients use — no forms, no account, and you can send it at any hour.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Any previous test results, scan reports, discharge letters or operation notes, however old. A list of medications you take, including anything herbal. And any questions written down — it is easy to forget them in the room.

Should my husband come with me?

For a fertility consultation, yes — investigating one partner alone risks missing the cause, and decisions are easier made together. For routine gynaecology it is entirely your choice.

Which languages are consultations in?

Arabic and English.

I am travelling from abroad. How do I plan?

Message the clinic before you book flights. Treatment cycles have to be timed around your own cycle, and it is much easier to plan the trip around the treatment than the other way round.

Fertility and IVF

When should we seek help for difficulty conceiving?

After a year of trying — or after six months if you are over 35, or sooner if periods are irregular or absent, or there is a known problem on either side.

Does my husband need testing too?

Yes, always. A male factor is involved in around half of all cases, and a semen analysis is quick and non-invasive.

Is IVF the only treatment for infertility?

No. Many couples conceive with ovulation induction tablets, treatment of an underlying condition, minor surgery, or IUI. IVF is offered where the simpler routes are unlikely to work or have been tried.

How long does an IVF cycle take?

From the start of stimulation to the pregnancy test is usually four to six weeks. Tests and preparation beforehand may add several weeks.

Pregnancy

When should my first antenatal appointment be?

As soon as you know you are pregnant, ideally within the first eight weeks. The first visit confirms and dates the pregnancy accurately.

Which symptoms mean I should be seen the same day?

Bleeding, severe or persistent abdominal pain, a bad headache with visual changes, sudden swelling of the face or hands, fever, fluid loss, or a noticeable reduction in your baby’s movements. Do not wait for the next appointment.

How many scans will I have?

Usually a dating scan early on, a detailed anomaly scan around the middle of pregnancy, and growth scans later. More are arranged if there is a reason.

Can I fast during Ramadan while pregnant?

Many women do, but it depends on how far along you are, your health and how the pregnancy is going. Discuss it before Ramadan begins rather than during it.

Scans and imaging

Is ultrasound safe for my baby?

Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than radiation and has been used in pregnancy for decades with no evidence of harm when performed by trained staff.

Will I definitely get a good picture?

Not always. It depends on the baby’s position, the fluid in front of the face, and where the placenta sits. If the baby is facing away, sometimes the answer is to come back another day.

Costs and practical matters

How much does a consultation cost?

⚠️ To be confirmed by the clinic. Ask on WhatsApp before your visit — the clinic will tell you the consultation fee and what any scan or test would add.

How long will I wait for an appointment?

⚠️ To be confirmed by the clinic.

Do you work with insurance?

⚠️ To be confirmed by the clinic.

IVF & Assisted Reproduction

How long does one IVF cycle take?

From the start of stimulation to the pregnancy test is usually four to six weeks. Preparation and tests beforehand may add several weeks, and Dr. Layyous will map the dates out with you at the first consultation.

Is IVF painful?

Most of the process is injections and scans rather than surgery. Egg collection is done under sedation, and discomfort afterwards is usually mild and short-lived. Tell the team if anything feels worse than expected.

What is the difference between IVF and ICSI?

In IVF, eggs and sperm are placed together and fertilisation happens on its own. In ICSI, a single sperm is injected directly into each egg. ICSI is usually chosen where sperm numbers or movement are low, or where a previous cycle fertilised poorly.

How many embryos will be transferred?

That depends on your age, embryo quality and history. Transferring fewer embryos lowers the chance of a twin pregnancy, which carries higher risks for mother and babies. It is a decision made together, not a fixed rule.

Do I need bed rest after embryo transfer?

No. The evidence does not support it, and lying still for days does not improve the chance of implantation. Normal daily activity is fine — the clinic will tell you the few things worth avoiding.

What happens if a cycle does not work?

A failed cycle is information. The response to stimulation, the fertilisation rate and the embryo quality all point towards what to change next time — a different protocol, further testing, or a different technique.

Infertility

When should we seek help?

After a year of trying without success — or after six months if you are over 35, or sooner if periods are irregular, absent or very painful, or there is a known problem on either side. Coming early costs nothing and often saves time.

Does the man need testing too?

Yes, always. A male factor is involved in around half of all cases, and a semen analysis is quick, simple and non-invasive. Investigating only one partner risks missing the actual cause.

Is IVF the only treatment?

Far from it. Many couples conceive with ovulation induction tablets, treatment of an underlying condition, minor surgery, or IUI. IVF is offered when simpler options are unlikely to work or have already been tried.

Does stress cause infertility?

Stress alone is not usually the cause, and being told to "just relax" is neither accurate nor kind. Severe stress can affect ovulation in some women, and treatment itself is stressful — which is a reason for support, not blame.

What is PCOS and does it mean I cannot conceive?

Polycystic ovary syndrome affects how regularly the ovaries release an egg. It is one of the most common causes of difficulty conceiving, and also one of the most treatable — many women conceive once ovulation is restored.

Does age really matter that much?

It matters more than any other single factor for women, because both the number and the quality of eggs decline with age, and the decline steepens after the mid-thirties. It is a reason to be seen sooner rather than a reason to give up.

Pregnancy & Antenatal Care

When should my first appointment be?

As soon as you know you are pregnant, ideally in the first eight weeks. The first visit confirms the pregnancy, dates it accurately, and picks up anything that benefits from early attention.

Which symptoms mean I should be seen urgently?

Bleeding, severe or persistent abdominal pain, a bad headache with visual changes, sudden swelling of the face or hands, fever, fluid loss, or a noticeable reduction in your baby’s movements. Do not wait for your next appointment.

How many scans will I have?

Usually a dating scan early on, a detailed anomaly scan around the middle of pregnancy, and growth scans later. More are arranged if there is a reason. Dr. Layyous will explain what each one is looking for.

Can I fast during Ramadan while pregnant?

Many women do, but it depends on how far along you are, your health, and how the pregnancy is going. It is worth discussing before Ramadan begins rather than during it, so you can plan safely either way.

Is it safe to exercise?

In an uncomplicated pregnancy, yes, and it usually helps with sleep, back pain and mood. Moderate activity you were already used to is the safest starting point. Ask before beginning anything new or strenuous.

Can I travel by air?

Usually until around 36 weeks in a straightforward single pregnancy, and earlier with twins. Airlines set their own limits and may ask for a letter. Long flights need attention to hydration and moving about.

Childbirth & Newborn

How will I know labour has started?

Regular contractions that grow stronger, longer and closer together, a show, or your waters breaking. Practice contractions are irregular and ease off. If you are unsure, call — nobody minds being asked.

When should I come to hospital?

When contractions are regular and strong, if your waters break, if there is bleeding, or if your baby’s movements change. With a previous fast labour or a caesarean, come earlier rather than later.

Do I have to have an epidural?

No. It is one option among several and can be requested at most points in labour, but plenty of women manage without. Knowing what is available beforehand makes the choice easier in the moment.

Can I have a normal birth after a caesarean?

Often yes, depending on why the caesarean was done, how the scar healed and how this pregnancy is going. It is discussed in detail well before your due date so the plan is agreed in advance.

How long does recovery take?

The first two weeks are the steepest, and six weeks is the usual guide for a vaginal birth. A caesarean takes longer and has lifting restrictions. Bleeding that becomes heavy again, fever or increasing pain should be reported.

What if breastfeeding is difficult?

It very often is at first, and difficulty is not failure. Most problems — latch, pain, supply worries — improve quickly with practical help. Ask early rather than struggling alone.

Gynaecology & Women’s Health

How heavy is too heavy for a period?

If you are changing protection every hour or two, passing large clots, flooding through to clothes or bedding, or feeling tired and breathless, that is worth investigating. Heavy bleeding is common but it is not something you simply have to accept.

Are period pains normal?

Mild cramping is. Pain that stops you working, studying or sleeping, or that is not helped by ordinary painkillers, is not — and can point to endometriosis or fibroids, both of which are treatable.

How often should I have a check-up?

An annual review is a reasonable habit from the start of sexual activity or around 21, with cervical screening at the interval recommended for your age. Anything unusual should be seen when it happens, not at the next annual visit.

Do fibroids always need removing?

No. Many cause no symptoms and can simply be watched. Treatment is considered when they cause heavy bleeding, pain, pressure, or difficulty conceiving — and there are medical as well as surgical options.

Is hormone therapy for menopause safe?

For most women starting near menopause, the benefits for symptoms and bone health outweigh the risks, but it depends on your own history. It is a personal calculation, made with you, not a blanket yes or no.

What should I do about unusual discharge or bleeding?

Bleeding between periods, after sex or after menopause, and any discharge with odour, itching or pain, should be checked. Most causes are simple and easily treated — but they should be identified rather than assumed.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

What is the difference between laparoscopy and hysteroscopy?

Laparoscopy looks at the outside of the womb, tubes and ovaries through small cuts in the abdomen. Hysteroscopy looks inside the cavity of the womb through the cervix, with no cut at all.

How long is the recovery?

Hysteroscopy is usually same-day with a return to normal activity within a day or two. Diagnostic laparoscopy typically means a few days of soreness and about a week off; larger operations take longer.

Will there be visible scars?

Laparoscopy leaves a few incisions of roughly five to ten millimetres, usually including one in the navel where it is hard to see. They fade considerably over the first year. Hysteroscopy leaves none.

Is it done under general anaesthetic?

Laparoscopy almost always is. Some hysteroscopies can be done with local anaesthetic or sedation, particularly diagnostic ones. This is discussed and agreed beforehand.

Can these operations help with fertility?

Sometimes significantly. Hysteroscopy can correct problems inside the cavity such as a septum, polyps or adhesions, and laparoscopy can treat endometriosis or open blocked tubes. Whether it will help in your case depends on the findings.

What should I do before the operation?

You will be given specific instructions on fasting, medication and what to bring. Follow them exactly — the most common reason an operation is postponed on the day is having eaten or taken something that should have been stopped.

Ultrasound Imaging

Is ultrasound safe for my baby?

Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than radiation and has been used in pregnancy for decades with no evidence of harm when performed by trained staff for medical reasons.

What is the difference between 3D and 4D ultrasound?

3D produces still images with depth, so the face and limbs look solid rather than flat. 4D is the same imaging shown as live movement. The galleries on this site are examples produced at the clinic over the years.

Will I definitely get a good picture?

Not always, and it is nobody’s fault. It depends on the baby’s position, the amount of fluid in front of the face, and where the placenta sits. If the baby is facing away, sometimes the answer is to try again another day.

Can a scan tell me the sex of my baby?

Usually from around 14 to 16 weeks. It is never guaranteed, since it depends entirely on the baby’s position on the day.

Does a normal scan mean everything is fine?

A detailed scan checks the structures that can be seen and is very good at what it does, but no scan can detect every condition. It is one part of your antenatal care rather than a complete guarantee.
