What he is known for

Areas of special expertise

  • IVF & assisted reproduction

The full laboratory programme — IVF, ICSI and the techniques around them — built up and refined over decades.

  • Advanced gynaecological surgery

Laparoscopic, hysteroscopic and robotic surgery, including complex reconstructive work — hysteroscopic correction of the uterus for recurrent miscarriage, and surgery for fibroids and endometriosis.

  • Ultrasound imaging

An early adopter of 3D and 4D imaging in Jordan; his scan images have been published in medical textbooks and science-photography libraries.

Clinical experience

Dr. Layyous has wide experience in general obstetrics and gynaecology, both medically and surgically, and works across every aspect of reproductive medicine — infertility diagnosis, ovulation induction, IVF and ICSI, and, for male infertility, PESA, TESA and TESE. He has performed diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy and laparoscopy since 1979, across thousands of procedures. His work in ultrasonography began in 1980 and has developed into the latest four-dimensional scanning. He attends courses and lectures continually, in the belief that the best doctor is one who never stops learning.

Surgical experience — 45+ years

Over four and a half decades he has performed thousands of gynaecological and reproductive procedures — spanning benign gynaecology, reproductive surgery, obstetric emergencies and pelvic reconstructive work — across diverse clinical settings, with a consistently low complication rate and a strong emphasis on evidence-based surgical safety.

His surgical philosophy has been consistent throughout: maximise future fertility while achieving anatomical correction. He has also trained and mentored junior surgeons in open and laparoscopic reproductive techniques.

  • Major abdominal surgery

Total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy; complex myomectomy for extensive fibroid disease — fibroids of all sizes and locations, including intramural, submucous and intraligamentary types.

  • Minimally invasive surgery

Diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy — polypectomy, myomectomy, endometrial ablation, septal resection, and adhesiolysis for Asherman’s syndrome by both hysteroscopic and open approaches. Diagnostic and operative laparoscopy — laparoscopic hysterectomy, ovarian cystectomy, salpingectomy for ectopic pregnancy, and adhesiolysis for severe pelvic adhesions.

  • Vaginal & pelvic reconstructive surgery

Vaginal hysterectomy, with anterior and posterior colporrhaphy.

  • Obstetric surgery

Caesarean sections for high-risk cases, including placenta previa and accreta, multiple pregnancies and foetal distress. Cervical cerclage: McDonald and Shirodkar — elective and emergency (rescue) — and abdominal cerclage after failed vaginal cerclage.

  • Tubal & ovarian fertility surgery

Hundreds of tubal procedures — salpingostomy, fimbrioplasty and tubal adhesiolysis for damaged tubes. Fertility-preserving ovarian cystectomy for dermoid cysts, endometriomas and benign neoplasms; laparoscopic ovarian drilling for PCOS; and ovarian transposition when indicated.

  • Endometriosis surgery

Advanced surgery for all stages of endometriosis, including excision of ovarian endometriomas with ovarian conservation and dissection of deep infiltrating endometriosis involving the bowel and bladder.

  • The assisted-reproduction interface

Early experience with ultrasound-guided oocyte retrieval, surgical sperm retrieval and tubal embryo transfer, as assisted reproductive technology evolved.

The practice

Forty-five years, two cities

Medicine in Jordan has changed beyond recognition over that time. Much of what the clinic does today — IVF, ICSI, genetic testing before transfer, advanced ultrasound imaging — simply did not exist when he started.

The approach has not changed: start with the simplest option that could work, explain every step in language that makes sense, and never rush the appointment.

  1. Training Medical school and specialist training

Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery; Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists; Jordanian Board in Obstetrics & Gynaecology; Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists; Subspeciality in Infertility and IVF.

  2. Early practice Establishing the practice in Jordan

Returned to Jordan to practise obstetrics and gynaecology — first in Zarka, then in Amman — at a time when much of what is routine today did not yet exist in the region.

  3. Assisted reproduction Bringing IVF to his patients

Developed the fertility side of the practice as assisted reproduction matured, adding ICSI, embryo freezing and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis as each became available.

  4. 3D and 4D imaging Among the first in Jordan

Introduced 3D and 4D ultrasound as the technology arrived in the country — the galleries on this site are images from his own machine, and his scans went on to be published worldwide.

  5. Today Forty-five years of practice

Continues to consult, operate and deliver in Amman, seeing patients from across Jordan and the Gulf — including the children of patients he delivered himself.
