Egg Retrieval Preparation: A Patient Guide to What to Do Before Your Procedure

Simple pre-egg retrieval checklist: fasting, trigger shot timing, hygiene, and recovery tips.

In short: Before egg retrieval you should fast for 6–8 hours, take the trigger injection at the exact time given, avoid intercourse for 3 days, avoid painkillers that thin the blood, and come with a companion because you must not drive for 24 hours. The procedure takes only 15–30 minutes. The two most important points are the timing of the trigger injection and the fasting.

Preparing carefully for your egg retrieval can help make the day go smoothly and support the best possible outcome for your IVF cycle. Below is a simple, step-by-step guide to help you feel confident and ready. If you have any questions about your specific instructions, please don’t hesitate to contact our clinic team.

1- Fasting Before the Procedure

  • Do not eat for 6–8 hours before your procedure; you may drink small amounts of water until 2 hours before, unless your anaesthetist advises otherwise.
  • Fasting helps reduce the risk of acid reflux during anesthesia, which can lead to choking.

2- Medication Adherence

  • Continue taking your stimulation or maintenance medications exactly as prescribed.
  • Administer the final maturation injection (trigger shot) precisely at the scheduled time given by your care team.
  • Giving the trigger shot even a little early or late may affect egg quality, so accuracy really matters here.

3- Medications to Avoid

  • Pain relievers that thin the blood, such as ibuprofen.
  • Blood thinners, including anticoagulant injections or aspirin tablets — if you take these for a medical condition, do not stop them on your own; tell your doctor, who will advise whether and when to pause them before the procedure.
  • Do not start any new medication or supplement without checking with your doctor first.

4- Personal Hygiene

  • Shower on the morning of the procedure.
  • Avoid creams, lotions, makeup, or nail polish.
  • Wear comfortable, breathable cotton clothing.

5- Abstinence Before the Procedure

  • Couples should avoid sexual intercourse for 3 days before the procedure.
  • The length of abstinence can influence the quality of the semen sample used for fertilization on the day of retrieval.

6- Bring Someone With You

  • Since the procedure is done under anesthesia, please arrange for someone to accompany you and help you get home safely.
  • Driving is not recommended for 24 hours after the procedure.

7- Empty Your Bladder

  • Try to empty your bladder right before the procedure. This helps prevent bladder injury and allows a clearer ultrasound view of the ovaries during egg retrieval.

8- Stay Calm and Comfortable

  • Try to relax as much as possible — mild anxiety is normal, and our team is there to support you.
  • Aim for good rest and sleep in the days leading up to your appointment.

The egg retrieval procedure typically takes about 15-30 minutes.

This is a day-case procedure, meaning you’ll be monitored in the recovery area for around two hours afterward to recover from the anesthesia before heading home.

It’s common to experience mild cramping, slight bloating, or abdominal discomfort afterward. If you have concerns about your symptoms, please reach out to your care team.

Two of the most important factors for a smooth egg retrieval are:

  • Taking the trigger shot at the exact prescribed time.
  • Following your fasting instructions carefully.
