Vaginal pH Explained: Why Vaginal Health Depends on the Right Balance

Learn what vaginal pH means, what disrupts it, and how to protect vaginal health naturally.

In short: Normal vaginal acidity (pH) is between 3.8 and 4.5, and this acidity protects against infection. It can be upset by periods, intercourse, antibiotics, vaginal douching and the menopause, allowing thrush and harmful bacteria to multiply. To protect it, avoid douching and wear cotton underwear. See the doctor for foul-smelling discharge, yellow or green discharge, or thick white discharge with itching.

  • The vagina is naturally characterized by an acidic environment.

What causes vaginal acidity?

This healthy acidity is due to the presence of a beneficial bacteria called Lactobacillus, which secretes lactic acid and helps protect the vaginal environment

In women of reproductive age, a healthy vaginal pH is between about 3.8 and 4.5; it is naturally higher before puberty and after menopause..

What are the benefits of an acidic vaginal environment?

An acidic vaginal environment helps prevent the growth of harmful bacteria, fungi, and other germs, supporting overall reproductive health.

Are there factors that can alter vaginal pH?

Yes, several everyday factors can shift vaginal pH, such as:

  • Menstruation, as blood is alkaline
  • Sexual intercourse, as semen is alkaline
  • Antibiotics, which can reduce beneficial bacteria
  • Using alkaline vaginal douches
  • Menopause, which leads to a decrease in estrogen, making the vagina more alkaline

What happens if the vaginal environment shifts from acidic to alkaline?

When the vagina becomes less acidic (pH above about 4.5), it creates a favorable environment for the growth of harmful bacteria, which can lead to infections such as bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis. Yeast (fungal) infections, on the other hand, usually happen while the vaginal pH is still normal.

How can I help maintain a healthy vaginal pH?

  • Avoid using vaginal douches
  • Choose feminine hygiene products that don’t alter vaginal pH
  • Wear cotton underwear and allow the area to stay ventilated
  • Use condoms, which help prevent alkaline semen from affecting the vaginal environment

How can I tell if I might have a vaginal infection?

Signs may include a foul-smelling discharge or discharge with an unusual color, such as white, yellow, or green. If you notice these symptoms, it’s best to consult your gynecologist for proper evaluation.

Can I measure my vaginal pH at home?

Yes, vaginal pH can be checked using pH test strips available at most pharmacies, but the result can be misleading shortly after a period or intercourse, and a normal pH does not rule out a yeast infection, so the strips cannot replace an examination by your doctor. However, if you have ongoing concerns about vaginal health or recurrent infections, it’s always a good idea to speak with a specialist for personalized guidance.
