Polycystic ovaries (PCOS)

Severe PCOS on one side, no sperm on the other — and still, a son

  • Kuwait
  • She was 37, her husband 45
  • TESE, then carefully monitored IVF — third cycle

Theirs was a difficult pairing of problems: she had very severe polycystic ovary syndrome, and he had azoospermia. Two earlier IVF attempts had failed because of poor sperm quality.

Sperm were recovered by TESE and frozen, and — because severe PCOS makes stimulation risky — her cycle was monitored intensively to keep her safe from complications while giving the best possible chance.

The third attempt was the one. She gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
