Fertilized Eggs and Embryo Development: A Visual Guide (IVF Photos)
See real embryology photos showing how fertilized eggs grow into embryos during IVF, explained by Dr. Layyous.
In short: This page shows real microscope photographs of what happens after egg retrieval: the fertilised egg with its two pronuclei, examples of abnormal fertilisation, and the division of the embryo into 2, 4, 6 and 8 cells up to day 3. Embryos naturally differ in speed of division and appearance, and the team watches these differences to choose the most suitable embryo for transfer.
During IVF treatment, one of the most exciting steps for patients is learning what actually happens to their eggs after fertilization. The photos below, taken in the embryology laboratory, show real examples of fertilized oocytes (eggs) and developing embryos at different stages — from the very first sign of fertilization to the multi-cell embryo stage just before transfer.
These images can help you understand the language your fertility team uses when discussing your treatment, such as “pronuclei,” “cell stage,” and “embryo grading.” Seeing these stages visually often makes the IVF process feel less abstract and easier to follow.

Understanding What You’re Seeing
After fertilization, an egg first shows two pronuclei — one from the egg and one from the sperm — which is the earliest visible sign that fertilization has occurred normally. As development continues, the embryo divides into 2 cells, then 4, then progressively more cells over the following days, typically reaching 6 to 8 cells by day 3.
Not every fertilized egg develops in a perfectly typical way. Some show unusual features, such as extra pronuclei or an irregular perivitelline space (the fluid-filled area around the egg), which the embryology team monitors closely. Your fertility specialist and embryologists assess these details to help guide decisions about which embryos may be most suitable for transfer.
Why This Matters for Your IVF Journey
Embryo development is a delicate, closely monitored process, and every case is unique. If you’re preparing for IVF or already in treatment, understanding these stages can help you feel more informed and confident when discussing your embryology report with your care team.
If you have questions about your own fertilization results or would like to learn more about the IVF process, the team at Dr. Najeeb Layyous’ clinic is here to guide you through each step with clear, compassionate explanations.
